Meiklejohn, Alex

Alex is one of the unsung artists of the miniature world. His pottery is hand thrown and hand molded using many different clays and glazes. He has recently slowed down his show schedule and is traveling less, so although his wares are found in most brick and mortar miniature shops, they may not be for much longer.

I am showing you now some of his wonderful miniature "face jugs". Face jugs were first made in the early 1800's, perhaps in Massachusetts, and definitely in South Carolina through the Civil War era. Early jugs are thought to have been created by African slaves. Examples of early full size jugs are rare and sell for mega-bucks.  In the early 1900's with the revived interest in folk art, potters began creating face jugs once again. Today, potters continue to create face jugs of all descriptions. These will be perfect not only in an ordinary colonial home, but anytime after the folk art revival of the early twentieth century. These items are one of a kind. Alex has signed all of these jugs.
